Understanding the Game of Roulette

The game of dice is probably considered the oldest type of gambling in history. A die can be made from animal bones etched with symbols. That is also one of the main reasons why dice is still called "bones" nowadays, even if the dice are made from Cellulose Acetate.

Pre-historic man used dice in many instances and some of the dice were even buried with these men. They used the dice to tell fortunes like when will an enemy attack and other events. Following on the heels of the dice is the wheel, which took a little while to invent than simply taking some bones from a sheep or from a dead loved one.

Although the game of roulette started as an official casino game began in the seventeenth century, Roman soldiers began playing a game using their shields. Gambling even existed during the time of Christ and Moses. Even the Pharaohs and Queens in Egypt like Nefertiri, played a game named hounds and jackals.

Roulette was a hit with both English and French nobility until 100 years ago, when a lot of members of the nobility became broke because of excessive playing of the game. As most casino players know, there are two types of roulette wheels that are currently in use by modern casinos; the American version which has an additional double zero pocket and the European version which has a single zero pocket.

Both wheels have 36 numbers. Since a jackpot in roulette pays the player $35 dollars to $1 dollars, the player is only losing $1 dollars per win on the French version (the odds at the wheel are at 36:1 but it pays 35 to the customers) while a player will lose $2 dollar per win on the American version (the odds are at 37:1 but it pays 35).

The casino edge on the American version is 5.26% percent which means the player will lose $5.36 dollars for every $100 dollars that they will wager. On the French version, the casino edge is 2.7% percent, which means the player will lose $2.70 dollars for every 100 dollars that they will wager.

Roulette is also a game which helped inspire most well-known wagering systems that can be found in gambling books and online sites. But sad to say, all of these wagering systems, however helpful they may seem, will not work because no technique can get pass the negative edge.

The first betting system that is frequently used by beginners is the Martingale system. While the roots of the system are not known, the logic behind the system is very easy to understand. Players must double their wager after they lose. The system is utilized against even money wagers of red and black, odd and even and small and large. If a player wagered $10 dollars and lose that wager, they will wager $20 dollars and if they lose, they will double that amount and so on.

The logic behind this technique is that the player must win one wager. If the player does win one wager, they will get all the money that they have wagered back. But it will have a devastating effect when the player finally lost because the player is wagering a lot of money and at the same time losing a lot of money.

The Labouchere system uses a cancellation method. If the player is wagering in a 1 to 5 sequence, the player should bet $6 dollars, the one and five combined. If you lose that wager, you will add a six to the sequence and repeat it until you win.

The d'Alembert technique states that if events will happen, they will happen equally. Like in a coin flip, there is a 50% percent chance that the player will get heads and a 50% percent chance that the player will get tails.

The most widely used system by roulette gamblers is the trend finding and opposing techniques. When the player sees the red slot come up in succession and you think that the black is next, you can wager on black or continue betting on red. But it does not really matter what the player does, the fact remains that the casino edge will take some of the player's money at every game they play at the casino.
